Here in the royal kingdom we’re celebrating Car Insurance Day and to get things started we’ve indulged our favourite car obsession by putting together our top list of the most famous cars!
There was some debate, some tears, and even a door or 2 slammed in frustration, but we managed to narrow it down to the following…
- The Queen’s Daimler Super V8 LWB
We couldn’t have a list of famous cars without including something royal! So to start us off is the Daimler Super V8 LWB, the Queen’s very own wheels. Jaguar pulled out all the stops to build the car to Her Majesty’s personal specifications and even completed a 2,500-mile test drive. Now THAT’S some mileage before you’ve even passed GO!
- ‘Ghostbusters’ 1959 Cadillac Ecto-1
There’s something strange about a list of famous cars that doesn’t include the white end-loading hearse that was instrumental in getting the 4 ghost exterminators from ghost A to ghost B. We loved the 1980s Cadillac Fleetwood used in the 2016 reboot, but the converted 1959 Cadillac Ecto-1 holds a special place in our hearts.
- ‘The Love Bug’ 1963 Volkswagen Beetle
Good ol’ Herbie… A 1963 VW Beetle with a heart of gold and a mind of its own. What made Herbie so special to us wasn’t just that it starred in a whopping 5 films, but rather its ability to drive itself, feel human emotions, and give the big boys a run for their money with its Porsche 356 engine. That, and it had to put up with Lindsey Lohan in “Herbie: Fully Loaded”. Give that Herbie a Bells, ek se!
- ‘Bumblebee’ 2009 Chevrolet Camaro Replica
What list is complete without factoring in the Autobots? Out of all the Transformers, Bumblebee, who begins the movie as a 1977 Camaro, before transforming into a 2009 Camaro, took hold of our hearts. He was even featured in Hot Rod magazine’s Nov. 2006 issue. What might surprise you, though, is that Bumblebee isn’t actually a Camaro. The car used was actually a re-bodied Pontiac GTO, modelled and re-badged for the Camaro concept car. Talk about a Hollywood facelift..!
- 1981 DeLorean DMC-12
Who could forget when Marty McFly went back 30 years into the past in the DeLorean DMC-12? Not us, that’s for sure! And if you had any hopes of owning a time-travelling car, then you may just be in luck. It seems that the very same DeLorean, which played such an integral role in the 1985 film, is up for grabs at DeLorean.com for a mere $54,000. A far cry from the $25,000 it would have cost, especially when you could have bought the Chevy Corvette for around $16,000 around the same time it was produced.
- ‘Grease Lightning’ 1948 Ford Deluxe
Made famous forever by John Travolta’s driving skills and sultry voice, the 1948 Ford Deluxe was a true winner for ferrying around the film’s sexiest hot rods, complete with their high-waist jeans and leather jackets.
- ‘Knight Rider’ 1982 Pontiac Trans Am
This crime-fighting supercar is actually a modified 1982 Pontiac Trans Am, built so that it could take the starring role as KITT in the NBC series “Knight Rider”. KITT could see, hear, smell, and deliver sarcasm with all the poise of the aristocracy. Hats off to you, KITT, for putting up with Michael Knight for all those years!
- 2002 Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R
Fast and Furious gave us a veritable treasure trove of cars to fall in love with. It also gave us more of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. And man, did we fall in love… But we weren’t the only 1s. The beloved and late (and great) Paul Walker lived out every gearhead’s dream of driving some of the world’s best cars and getting paid a circus-load for the privilege. Out of all the cars that Paul drove, the Nissan Skyline GT-R was a staple in the franchise and Paul loved it so much that he bought the 1 he drove in the 4th film.
Our love of cars doesn’t stop at the car itself. We’re also obsessed with car insurance. In particular, we have developed a state-of-the-art car insurance product that comes with super affordable premiums which decrease every month as the value of your car depreciates. You can also choose your own excess to suit you. It’s important to remember, though, that lower excess = higher premiums and a higher excess = lower premiums.
Our consultants are car-obsessed and highly trained to help you make the right choice for your insurance needs. Take a few minutes to get a quick quote for your precious wheels or find out more about our car insurance here.
