So you’re a bit of an adrenaline junkie. You love 4X4s and monster trucks, and think there’s nothing better than a good bundu trail to show off the potential of your car. You’re always looking for a new challenge, and the perfect terrain to put your off-road machine through its paces. Before your next off-road adventure, you should go through a quick checklist to ensure that you’re safe. Take a look at our compilation of insurance advice that helps to ensure you and your car are sorted before the ride.
The Ultimate Checklist:
- The basics – Always try to travel in groups of at least 2 vehicles, and make sure that you tell family and friends where you’re going, and for how long you’ll be gone. This way, if something happens, someone will be able to help you out.
- The car check – This is generally important across the board, but essential for off-road vehicles. Make sure that you check your oil, brake fluid, radiator coolant, seat belts, tyre pressure and spare wheel, steering, shocks and electric systems. Rustic trails often put cars through some serious wear-and-tear, so it’s better to discover any existing damage beforehand, rather than on the trip.
- Medical kit – In the event that you experience an accident, you need to be prepared. Double check that your first-aid kit contains antiseptic, swabs, an ice pack, a blanket, gauze and flashlights. It may also be a good idea to bring extra food and water – just in case you have to wait for help overnight.
- Insurance – Most people think that getting car insurance for off-road vehicles is pointless. But the truth is, these vehicles take quite a beating and often face more damage and repair charges than normal cars. Although they’re built to be strong, the intensity of trail driving will eventually cause long-term mechanical issues and bodywork faults. Ask your insurance company whether they provide an off-road policy and make sure you cover all your bases.
That’s our useful list of precautions to take before you go out there and become the lord of the 4X4.
